How does a Wind Energy System work?
Wind turbines can be categorized into two types; horizontal-axis, these turbines are similar to the traditional farm windmills used for pumping water. The other type is the v ertical-axis design; these turbines are more of an eggbeater-style. These turbines are also called the Darrieus model, named after its French inventor. Most large modern wind turbines are horizontal-axis turbines.
Components of a Wind Energy System:
- Blade or Rotor - Converts the energy in the wind to rotational shaft energy.
- D rive train - Usually includes a gearbox and a generator.
- T ower - Supports the rotor and drive train;
- An enclosure, or nacelle, which protects the gearbox, generator and other components of the turbine from the elements.
- A tailvane or yaw system, which aligns the turbine with the wind.
- Other equipment - Controls, electrical cables, ground supportequipment, and interconnection equipment
